Sales of official lottery products in mainland China reached nearly 245.2 billion yuan (about $36 billion) in the January-June period of 2018, up 19.6% from a year earlier, data released by China's finance ministry showed on Wednesday.
Welfare lottery sales totaled about 110.6 billion yuan in the first half of the year, up 4.2% year-on-year. Sports lottery sales rose 36.1% year-on-year to slightly above 134.6 billion yuan.
Official data showed a rise in lottery sales in 29 of mainland China's 31 provinces and cities in the six months to June 30.
Guangdong continues to be the leading lottery market in mainland China. In the first half of 2018, lottery sales in the province reached nearly 23 billion yuan, an increase of 15.8% year-on-year.
Guangdong followed, with Jiangsu seeing total lottery sales of about 20.9 billion yuan in the first six months, up 28.2% year-on-year.
China's eastern province of Shandong was the third-largest market for lottery products in the first half of the year, data showed on Wednesday. Total lottery sales rose 11.5% year-on-year to nearly 18.6 billion yuan during the reporting period.
Lottery sales jumped 73.2% year-on-year to 58.6 billion yuan in the month of June.
This was mainly due to a nearly 147 percent year-on-year increase in sports lottery sales. The Ministry of Finance said sports lottery sales for this month reached 39.5 billion yuan on the back of the FIFA World Cup. The tournament was held between June 14 and July 15.
Last month's welfare lottery sales were about 19.1 billion yuan, up 7.1% year-on-year
